With a background in stockbroking, financial planning and law, Jo Hastings’ path to becoming the Macpherson Kelley Foundation’s manager has been a journey.
Having started her legal career working on broad commercial matters, Jo found her passion was in working with people and helping look after their wellbeing. Previously heading up the Private Clients team as a Principal Lawyer, the focus on estate and legacy planning was a natural fit.
On a trip to Kathmandu to see firsthand the work of her own family’s charitable foundation, Jo and her family found themselves caught up in the devastating 2015 earthquake that struck Nepal and killed nearly 9000 people. Seeing this as a sign to follow her passion and working in the philanthropic space, the idea of the Macpherson Kelley Foundation was born.
The Foundation was created as a Public Ancillary Fund, a structure that gives clients, through the creation of sub-funds, and Macpherson Kelley employees, through the Workplace Giving program, a chance to support charitable causes in a sustainable and meaningful way. With the philanthropic and charity space in Australia being complex, Jo saw the Foundation as a means to educate and create awareness around giving. It provides an opportunity to make charity donations in a more strategic way.
“I am grateful and somewhat humbled to have the opportunity to walk alongside our clients and their families as they explore and create their own philanthropic vision. It may be as a family, as a legacy in honour of a loved one or any stage in the business cycle. As a firm, seeing the difference we can make together when we harness the boundless energy and passion of our people in a fun, inclusive and impactful way is amazing.”
