The Media law team at Macpherson Kelley has been ranked in the top Band 1 category for Media law for the seventh year running in Australia by legal guide Chambers and Partners.

The ranking in the Chambers Asia-Pacific 2019 guide reflects the leading role Macpherson Kelley plays acting for Australia’s largest media companies.

Principal Lawyer and Media team lead Justin Quill was also ranked Band 1 in Media while Principal Lawyer John-Paul Cashen was ranked “Up and Coming”.

Macpherson Kelley CEO Steve Parker congratulated Justin and John-Paul on their rankings and the Media team for their work establishing the firm’s reputation as who media companies can turn to when they need help.

“The media faces many challenges performing their role reporting the news, such as defamation laws and suppression orders. Our Media team have proven themselves helping the media to navigate those challenges and keep the public informed,” he said.

Macpherson Kelley’s Media team works on a wide range of matters that impact on the media including contempt of court, freedom of information, copyright, breaches of confidence and protecting journalist sources.

They have been involved in significant high profile matters including the recent “Lawyer X” scandal in Victoria, the award winning The Teacher’s Pet crime podcast series and resisting suppression orders in the Geoffrey Rush defamation case.

Justin and John-Paul also regularly provide expert commentary on legal matters affecting the media.
