Head of Macpherson Kelley’s Tax team, John Ioannou elected to National Council at The Tax Institute
Principal Lawyer and Head of Macpherson Kelley’s Tax team, John Ioannou, has been elected to The Tax Institute’s National Council as its Queensland representative. John has long been involved in The Tax Institute, which is the leading forum for the tax community in Australia, acting as State Councillor for 6 years, then as Chair of the National Engagement Committee before moving into the National Councillor role.
“I want to be a voice for my Queensland constituents and an advocate for good policy over politics,” said John.
John’s appointment comes at a time when tax is top of the national agenda. Tax policy is set to feature at the upcoming Economic Reform Roundtable in August, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers stating, “[n]o sensible progress can be made on productivity, resilience or budget sustainability without proper consideration of more tax reform.”
John says that professional bodies like The Tax Institute play an important role in advocating for good law informed by advisers and industry experts.
“Tax policy has been widely discussed in news publications around the country – and for good reason. Having worked so closely with advisers and lawyers who work within the tax system every day, the frustration amongst the community is palpable,” said John.
“We are at a boiling point,” he said.
The Tax Institute has been outspoken about the need for greater tax reform, including, most recently, criticism of the Albanese Government’s plan to tax unrealised gains – a view that John strongly agrees with.
“As a lawyer, I know that poorly drafted legislation has serious implications for taxpayers and the inevitable tax disputes that will follow. I’m eager to roll up my sleeves and contribute to the good thinking taking place within The Tax Institute’s Policy and Advocacy Team and offer support for Queensland’s state council,” said John.
John’s role as part of The Tax Institute’s National Council will encompass advocacy on behalf of the Queensland tax community, as well as membership engagement, education, and the statewide implementation of a national agenda.
