Ellen McGettigan is known by clients and colleagues for her pragmatic and practical approach to disputes. Understanding that people are at the forefront of everything she does, Ellen approaches all matters with empathy and understanding while working collaboratively with her clients and opposing parties to achieve the desired outcome.
Ellen’s practice is particularly focused on the areas of insolvency and restructuring, debt recovery and contract and building disputes. She advises and acts for a vast range of clients, including liquidators and trustees, company officers, creditors, shareholders and debtors, offering practical and considered advice throughout every stage of a dispute.
Ellen’s prominence in her field has been recognised by the profession as well as clients. In 2024, Ellen was recognised by Doyles Guide as a Rising Star, and more recently, Ellen was identified by Best Lawyers as ‘one to watch’ in the area of Litigation and Insolvency and Reorganisation Law – Adelaide.
Ellen is especially respected in the industry for her commitment to giving back to the industries she serves. Her engagement as a committee member of the Women in Insolvency Network SA (WINSA), and a member of the Law Council of Australia’s Insolvency and Restructuring Committee (SA) highlights her drive to shape her profession for the better.
“Achieving great outcomes for clients while prioritising clear communication and strategy is at the heart of what I do.”

Ellen acted for the liquidators of a novel food production company in seeking leave to appoint themselves as administrators to enable the company’s creditors to consider the company entering into a deed of company arrangement. Ultimately that proposal was accepted by creditors which enabled the company to continue to trade on and maximise the return for creditors than otherwise would have been available in a liquidation context.
Ellen acted for a director and shareholder in a contentious and emotional dispute between equal shareholders. Ultimately seeking that the corporate vehicle be wound up on just and equitable grounds as a consequence of the deadlock to the great relief of the client. This matter was a reminder that while liquidation is an order of last resort, an independent third party can sometimes provide the parties the opportunity to take a step back, breathe and focus on the bigger picture.
