about Michael

Michael Sheehan understands what it takes to successfully see a project through to completion and advise on complex construction and infrastructure matters. His knowledge of the intricacies of construction methodologies and the legal nuances that exist within the industry has seen him involved on several notable projects in Queensland including the Queensland Children’s Hospital (Lend Lease), Gold Coast Light Rail Project (Arup), UQ Oral Health Project (Lend Lease), Coal Seam Gas infrastructure (Laing O’Rourke / GLNG) and Queensland New Generation Rollingstock Project (Alstom).

More generally, Michael has acted for clients in relation to drafting, negotiating and terminating agreements (both standard and bespoke) and dispute resolution (including litigation, expert determination and alternative dispute resolution). He is also experienced in acting on behalf of clients and advising in relation to various general commercial and insurance matters.

“Our aim as lawyers should be that of trusted advisor.  Understanding who the client is, what challenges they face and what outcomes they seek are key to providing practical and valued advice.”

Macpherson Kelley in Queensland is a pre-qualified Local Buy supplier of Legal Services (LB311).

recent experience

  • responding urgently to client enquiries

Michael has been involved in several matters where the reputation of the client/company is a paramount concern. In these circumstances, it was essential to obtain key facts as quickly as possible so that the legal merits of the scrutiny or criticism being leveled at the client/company could be assessed, and a recommendation could be made for the path forward. Understanding urgency and promptly providing clients/companies with these assessments helps them mitigate reputational damage and come to an action plan swiftly.

  • working collaboratively to meet client objectives

Michael has worked in a direct capacity with clients on many matters. On various occasions, he has volunteered to work within a client’s office if it will assist in achieving the client’s objectives (usually in the context of disputes where submissions and witness evidence needs to be produced in a short time). This isn’t always possible, but clients certainly appreciate having direct access to their legal advisors – especially in volatile times.

  • thinking “outside the box"

Michael has been involved in complex litigation necessitating the electronic review and disclosure of millions of data-heavy engineering documents. Given the scale of the data involved, Michael introduced the client to an IT consultant with specialist expertise, and together they established a bespoke data-hosting platform that delivered the client considerable efficiencies and significant cost savings.
