The new training levy has passed Parliament

The Migration (Skilling Australians Fund) Charges Bill 2018 passed both houses of Parliament on May 8th. This means the new training levies will be payable for every 482 or 186 or 187 Nomination from the date this Bill receives Royal Assent.

The training levies are going to dramatically change the way employers go about sponsoring staff for an Australian visa.

The current method of showing training expenses is difficult, time-consuming, and inefficient. The training levies will streamline this process into one payment made at the time the nomination application is lodged.

What does this mean for your business?

Once this Bill comes into effect, you will need to pay, in addition to the Nomination filing fee, a training levy at the time of the Nomination application for a 482, 186 or 187. These fees are non-refundable except for a limited number of prescribed circumstances.

Businesses with a turnover of $10 million or more will make one upfront payment of $1,800 for each year that the Nomination seeks to employ a 482 visa applicant. A one-off payment of $5,000 will also apply for each person Nominated for a permanent residency visa.

If the business turnover is less than $10 million, the levy is $1,200 for each year that the Nomination seeks to employ a 482 visa applicant. The one-off payment for these businesses is $3,000 for each person Nominated for a permanent residency visa.
