On 1 November 2018, the Fair Work Commission decided upon increases to penalty rates under the General Retail Industry Award 2010 (GRIA). The increases are being phased in over a number of years. The latest round of increases came into effect on 1 October 2019.

The change increases some penalty rates for casual employees in relation to evening work and Saturday work.

A summary of affected rates (including planned future increases) is provided below:

evening hours (after 6pm on monday to friday)

From 1 October 2019 10% increase for casual employees
From 1 March 2020 15% increase for casual employees
From 1 October 2020 20% increase for casual employees
From 1 March 2021 25% increase for casual employees

saturday work (in addition to the 25% casual loading)

From 1 October 2019 20% increase for casual employees
From 1 March 2020 25% increase for casual employees

If any part of your business is covered by the GRIA, we recommend you review current wage arrangements to ensure compliance.
