Parliament throws lifeline in face of Covid-19
Wednesday night, 8 April 2020, was a landmark occasion for millions of Australians when two things occurred:
- Parliament passed the JobKeeper wage subsidy legislation; and
- the Fair Work Commission (FWC) approved changes to 99 modern awards under the Fair Work Act.
The Job Keeper provisions in the Fair Work Act, which soon commence, will temporarily allow employers who qualify for the JobKeeper subsidy and their employees greater flexibility in adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For those looking to the awards for relief, the variations, which are in effect immediately until 30 June, provide two weeks’ unpaid pandemic leave and new rights to take extended annual leave at half pay.
