Skilled occupation lists for regional visas released

The skilled occupation lists for the new Regional Visas (Subclass 491 and 494 visas) have been released before the commencement date of these visas on 16 November 2019.
The Subclass 489 and Subclass 187 visa will be repealed and applications for these visas must be made before 15 November 2019.
Our previous update, which can be found here highlighted the new regional visas announced as part of the Federal Government’s wider population policy.
The Department of Home Affairs has released the skilled occupation list in which applicants who have an occupation on this list can submit an application for a five year visa with the condition that the visa holder, as well as all family members, will live, work and study in regional Australia.
The occupation lists can be found here.
There are 650 occupations that can be nominated for these visas. This is a significant increase on the approximate 500 occupations that can be nominated for the Temporary Skills Shortage (subclass 482) visa and the 216 occupations that can be nominated for the Permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) visa.
regional areas
While the relevant legislative instrument has not yet been released, the Department of Home Affairs has indicated that “Regional” will be designated as any postcode that is not metropolitan Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
Recently, the Department announced Perth and the Gold Coast will be classified as Regional area for the purposes of the new visas.
pathway to permanent residency
The permanent residence option (Subclass 191) for these visas will come into effect in November 2022 when the first recipients from the new regional visas will become eligible after holding the new Regional Visa for three years.
