Today is World Intellectual Property Day – a day to celebrate and recognise the important role intellectual property plays in the protection and continuous development of innovation and creativity throughout the world.

The theme for this year’s World Intellectual Property Day is ‘Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity‘. This theme celebrates women who are constantly driving change in our world and shaping our future.

Macpherson Kelley sees this year’s theme as a perfect opportunity to recognise and celebrate one of our very own clients who we believe perfectly personifies this theme: Bernadette Eriksen.

Bernadette is the founder and CEO of Flavour Creations, a Brisbane-based food manufacturing company that researches and develops innovative dysphagia and nutrition product solutions intended to support and improve the lives of people living with dysphagia (the medical term for difficulty or discomfort in swallowing and more than one million Australians are affected). Flavour Creations are world leaders in the design and manufacture of a variety of their products, selling both throughout Australia and internationally.

As the 2017 Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year and winner of the 2017 Telstra entrepreneur award, Bernadette is incredibly passionate about her business and the work she does.

Bernadette is a perfect example of the innovation and creativity we are celebrating today. Bernadette is not only a valued client, but she is improving the lives of people all around the world through her game-changing product innovations and life-enhancing creations. Bernadette is a role model to many young women, including, in particular, the young women working here at Macpherson Kelley.

Macpherson Kelley is proud to work with Bernadette and, amongst other things, assist with ensuring that her intellectual property remains properly and effectively protected, used and managed at all times.

However, while it is important to recognise the success resulting from Bernadette’s innovative and creative products, it is also important to remember what can happen if there is a failure to effectively protect the intellectual property. Bernadette, and many others like her, may not have been able to reach such astounding success and improve the lives of so many people if her products and IP were not properly protected from day one.

Too often we see cases where brilliant ideas and inventions cannot be used or exploited simply because of a lack of intellectual property protection.

Fortunately, Macpherson Kelley specialises and is extensively experienced in all areas of intellectual property. We make it a priority to understand your business, your industry and your products or services to ensure we can assist with providing the best possible protection.

If you would like to discuss your intellectual property protection, or have us develop a comprehensive intellectual property strategy for your business, please contact our Intellectual Property team.
